5 Signs Your Drain Field Is Failing (and What to Do)

The drain field is usually the first part of a septic system to fail, and it rarely fails without warning. Catch it early and you have options; ignore it and the repair only gets bigger.

1. Wet or spongy ground over the field

Standing water or unusually lush, soggy grass over the drain field means effluent isn't soaking away like it should.

2. Sewage odors outside

A septic smell around the field or tank is a red flag that the system isn't processing waste properly.

3. Slow drains and gurgling

When multiple drains slow down at once — or you hear gurgling — the system may be backing up.
